Fall is definitely in the air! While we begin to layer up with sweaters and jackets, nature begins to shed its summer attire. Plants begin to let go of elements that overtax energy, resulting in discoloration and loss of leaves.  We, too, seek to conserve energy in covering up.

In yoga we find balance and conserve energy by tapping into our breath. Most of us understand that breathing is vital. In fact, we become more aware of its importance when breath is impaired and we struggle. Literally, breath is life.

Prana (life energy) flows along the breath. As we take a slow, smooth inhalation, lungs expand and the diaphragm descends to make space as oxygen enters the blood. Energetically, we feel spacious, open, powerful or strong. Conversely, as we exhale slowly and smoothly, lungs contract and the diaphragm lifts, allowing carbon dioxide to exit. Energetically, we are soothed, balanced, or calmed. Pranayama (breath practice), the fourth limb of yoga, moves energy around in a slow, mindful path to bring steady enduring support throughout the body and mind.

On the other hand, when breath is forceful, it creates a different sort of energy. Short, sharp inhalations and exhalations result in a burst of energy that can, ultimately, lead to disruption of the breath, like hiccups or hyperventilation. However, when controlled, this energy can empower us. For example, when transitioning into an inversion, like Sirsasana (headstand) or Urdhva Danurasana (upward bow), inhale and then exhale forcefully. This technique allows you to harness the strength exhalation, in which the active inhalation builds energy and the active exhalation releases it in a burst.

Remember, your breath affects more than just your physical state; it can either support or deplete your energetic well-being. By becoming more aware of your breath, you can tap into its powerful support. As we embrace the change of seasons, let’s also embrace the energy within us—one breath at a time.
